the choices we make
Last night millions of viewers tuned in to watch the 2008 NBA draft. Leading up to the draft many experts and sports commentators shared their thoughts and predictions on which players would fit in with which teams. For some teams, history can be made in a single choice on draft night. However at the end of the day, the NBA draft is still a toss up, or as the top picks are called “a lottery.” And despite some teams winning out and drafting well, there are usually many more losers and regrets.
Though most people will never be involved in any sports draft, everyone is still faced with choices they have to make that will affect their lives in significant ways. So how does a person of faith know whether or not the choices they are making are right? Especially the important ones regarding marriage, career, church, and friendships. Looking back over my own life, I can see evidences of God’s invisible hand of providence pushing and nudging, teaching and correcting. And as much solace I find in the fact that the sovereignty of God cannot be thwarted by my daily decisions, I still worry and stress over whether or not what I’m doing is according to his will.
Perhaps the biggest lesson I’ve learned regarding all the good and bad choices I’ve made in life is the importance of commitment. Commitment is what can turn dreams into reality. Nothing happens without commitment. Even the top picks from last night’s draft will not succeed on talent alone. Hype is overrated while commitment is under looked. Some players will work hard, stay the course, and not make any excuses for where they are. And one day, their commitment to the sport they love may give them the opportunity to look back and realize what hard work and motivation can do.
On the flip side, some of the best players taken last night will become a distant memory in just a couple of years. They’ll take for granted the gifts they possess. The opportunities they’ve been afforded. And blow the chance of a lifetime.
Wherever you are and whatever you have, don’t take it for granted. God has a plan for you. Commit where you are. Run the race. Fight the good fight. And always keep your eyes on the prize.
